The Buckeye Lake Historical Society was formed in 1994 and fund raising for a Historical Museum immediately took place. Local resident Mac Wood had long been a contractor for the Wolfe Family, owners of the Dispatch Printing Company. He worked for them on Journal Island. Mac suggested to them that they host a tour of their beautiful island estate. John F. Wolfe suggested that they ask his neighbor, Dave Thomas, owner of Wendy's, if he would like to join in. He happily agreed. The Society was able to raise $30,000 which launched the building of the Historical Museum.

Many of our museum visitors are curious about the Islands and their history. Our current Ways and Means Committee had been searching for methods to generate income for the Historical Museum. The original Island Tour idea was discussed. In 2011 the Society was very fortunate to have two individuals come forward and offer their islands for a Summer Tour.

The Hennessey family of Zanesville opened up their Circle Island home that was built in 1910 and had never been opened to the public. The island has the original home along with beautiful grounds. The second island, owned by Bill Schottenstein, is named Compass Point and features a newly constructed home. The island was originally named Beech Island.

More than 100 tickets were sold for the 2011 tour and $10,000 was raised for the society and the Museum. The visitors first traveled to Circle Island aboard the Queen of the Lake, for drinks and light refreshments. The Queen then took them to Compass Point for a wonderful dinner and entertainment. The warm evening with breezes blowing softly across Buckeye Lake created a memorable evening for everyone that attended.

The Island Tours have become an annual event for the Museum. Planning is underway for the 2012 island tour. Follow this website for updates.
